Why Waiting Until You’re Ready Is Keeping You Stuck

Why waiting until you’re ready may be the biggest obstacle to your growth.

“I’ll do it when I’m ready.”

It’s one of the most common phrases I hear from leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals.

Ironically, it’s also one of the biggest reasons people stay exactly where they are.

During a recent “Make an Impact” podcast interview with Stephen Turnbull, I shared something that has guided many of the biggest decisions in my life:

Do it afraid.

Not because fear disappears.

Because action changes you.

Growing up in Russia during the collapse of the Soviet Union, uncertainty wasn’t something I read about in books—it was daily life. My family experienced food shortages, financial hardship, and constant uncertainty. Those experiences taught me resilience long before I knew what leadership meant.

Years later, after moving to the United States and building a career in higher education, I reached another crossroads. I loved serving people, yet I sensed I was capable of creating a greater impact. That realization led me to study personal growth and leadership, become certified through several world-class organizations, and eventually launch Step Up & Thrive.

Leaving a stable career wasn’t comfortable.

With a busy and dynamic lifestyle that comes with four children.

A mortgage.

Responsibilities.

There was no guarantee it would work.

My husband simply said, “If you think you can do it…do it.” So I jumped.

One of my mentors often says:

Build your wings on the way down.

That became more than motivation.

It became a lifestyle.

Fear Isn’t the Problem

Most people think fear keeps them stuck.

In my experience, that’s rarely true.

The bigger obstacle is hesitation.

People wait for confidence.

They wait for certainty.

They wait until the timing feels perfect.

But confidence doesn’t come before action.

Confidence grows because of action.

Every courageous decision expands your capacity.

Analysis Paralysis

One challenge I consistently see in executive coaching is analysis paralysis.

Leaders overthink.

Entrepreneurs overplan.

Professionals research endlessly.

Yet nothing changes because action never happens.

Action creates clarity.

Movement reveals answers planning never will.

Focus Beats More Ideas

Another lesson I’ve learned is that success doesn’t come from doing more.

It comes from doing fewer things exceptionally well.

One of my mentors shared a lesson I’ll never forget:

Be laser focused instead of well-rounded.

When your attention is divided among countless priorities, progress slows. When you become fully committed to one meaningful direction, momentum begins to build.

The People Around You Matter

Our environment quietly shapes our future.

Sometimes we need to borrow someone else’s belief in us before we fully believe in ourselves.

For me, that came from my grandmother, my mother, mentors, and people willing to encourage me when I couldn’t yet see what was possible.

Choose voices that strengthen your courage—not your hesitation.

My Challenge for You

What conversation have you been postponing?

What opportunity have you convinced yourself you’re “not ready” for?

What dream keeps waiting for permission?

Maybe the next breakthrough isn’t waiting for more confidence.

Maybe it’s waiting for one courageous step.

Do it afraid.

One decision could change everything.
